The live music sector in BC – managers, promoters, venues and festivals – is one of diversity and growth, impacting communities large and small across the province. A growing sense of community and coordination within the sector has provided a foundation for BC stakeholders to fall back on where, historically, little external support has existed. Sector-wide optimism is due, in part, to the recent establishment of Amplify BC (BC’s music fund administered by Creative BC). The survey found that 80% of the province’s live music companies, for example, expect growth in revenues and attendance in the coming year. Also on the rise is a desire to nurture diverse audiences, promote what is a vibrant festival economy, and forge new connections with BC’s tourism sector. The live music sector in BC is poised to meet these developments. In 2017, BC’s live music companies supported 12,010 FTEs0F , $619.3 million in BC-based labour income, and $815.8 million in GDP to the provincial economy.1F Tourists visiting BC for a musicrelated events contributed a further 2,900 FTEs, $99.1 million in BC-based labour income, and $168.7 million in GDP.

Throughout its long history, nightlife has been central to New York City’s identity. The “city that never sleeps” is
a destination for dreamers and doers and an epicenter of creativity. It boasts something for everyone once the sun sets, including opportunities for dining, dancing, performing, socializing, or building a career. Over many decades, New York nightlife has launched cultural and social movements that resonated far beyond the city’s shores: from the social consciousness of beat poetry, folk music, and hip-hop, to the rhythms of jazz, salsa, disco, punk rock, and many more. New York nightlife has inspired artists and entertainers to push boundaries, and provided places for people to come together to find community, all of which contributes to the city’s distinctive energy.

The first chapter, Cultural and creative industries for an inclusive and sustainable development, makes a description of the global context of this group of activities and its impact on Latin America and the Caribbean; its potentialities maker of income through trade and intellectual property rights; its direct relationships with popular knowledge, culture, art, and economy; and close link with other industries like tourism. It is notable its ever increasing impact within the regional cultural policies and its visibility within the strategies of social and economic development, specifically of music as development tool and a result of the approach by UNIDO to contribute to the Objectives for Sustainable Development (OSD). In the specific case of Cuba, opportunities are seen within the music industry, being this one of the art forms more diffused in society which has made the country gain the world designation of «The Music Island». Likewise, its democratic cultural and inclusive policy and system of cultural institutions are noted as positive allowing the massive access to culture as well as to the diversity of goods and services it generates. In the second chapter, Current context of music industry in Cuba, describes the status of the Cuban music industry in a diagnosis that analyzed the accumulated knowledge regarding technical, technological, political, scientific, economic and legal aspects, related to all processes of the value chain of the music industry. Its potentialities are verified emphasizing on the significant development of the institutional system that promotes and protects diversity of music genres and expressions as well as professionality and high level of a great mass of music creators formed by artistic education. In addition, it relates the main challenges to face for better use and functioning of the music industry. Finally, in the third chapter, Proposal of a national strategy for the music industry, it is proposed a particular view of development with an approach of value chain where the different role-players of the Cuban music industry participate from music creation up to consumption in which institutions and managing officials are the main responsible for its execution and systematic evaluation. The proposal is characterized by its values and general and specific objectives and each stage and strategic actions of its design are described as well as the specific actions to carry out

This publication seeks to offer a multiplicity of viewpoints on the topic. The intent is not necessarily to point out answers, but rather to discuss the concept of creative economy and its practices through the knowledge prism of thinkers who understand its local reality and take art in the transformational process that leads communities to development. The collection of texts looks at the actions of the Itaú Cultural Institute, which contributes to the democratization of access to cultural assets. With the creation of the Observatory in 2006, the institute became a locus for reflection on the contemporary cultural arena, reinforcing the study of local and global themes such as the intersection of culture with the economy and – above all – acknowledging the importance of publicizing information regarding the sector as a tool for the development of cultural policies and making these data accessible.

This report presents estimates of the economic impact of the music industry on the Seattle economy. It is the second attempt to measure these impacts, with a first report completed four years ago (Beyers, Bonds, Wenzl and Sommers, 2004). The current report is organized as follows. We first present a definition of the components of the industry. We then outline a market structure for these components. The second section of this report reviews briefly other studies of the music industry, while the third section provides a description of the data sources used to try to quantify the economic impact of the industry on the Seattle area economy. The fourth section provides economic impact estimates, while the last section provides some concluding remarks.

Study link: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/264748007_Economic_Impact_of_the_Commercial_Music_Industry_in_Atlanta_and_the_State_of_Georgia_New_Estimates

This study reviews the major findings of the previous studies and provides a new set of estimates of the economic impact of the commercial music industry in Georgia. We find that the primary music industry in Georgia has expanded both in terms of establishments and employment, but employment and establishments in secondary music industry, which includes specific industries such as Musical Instrument Stores and Electronic Parts & Equipment, have decreased since the previous study. This demonstrates that the industry mix continues to change, but the total level of output continues to grow. The growth in total output between the 2005 and current study is between $10 and $57 million depending on the base for the 2007 estimates (“sales” or “employment”). The total level of employment fell because of the contraction in the secondary music industry. The revenue impact of the industry is between $47 and $50 million per year.

This detailed Report outlines a pathway to make Sydney a global city – one that is open all hours, stands tall with other 24 hour world cities, and one that is competitive for doing business and attracting international talent and tourists.

As we recover and build back better from the impact of Covid, now is the perfect time for Sydney to press the reset button. Crises can create opportunities to re-think and change the norm. Now is the time to capitalise on the changing work/life hours and patterns that Covid restrictions have produced and plan ahead for a longer and stronger 24 hour economy.

Considered simply in terms of the jobs it provides, the businesses it includes, the payroll it generates, and the job growth it spurs, the music industry turns out to be an important component of the overall economy of Chicago (and of other cities as well). But these ways of looking at the music industry capture only part of its contribution to the economy of a city. At least as significant, we believe, is the role that music plays in enticing music-lovers to visit and even relocate to a city with a vibrant live music scene. With competition for tourist dollars increasingly fierce, and with urban developers and planners increasingly aware of the need to woo the “creative class” 2 by investing in amenities that improve the quality of life, what goes on in local music clubs, ballrooms, large auditoriums, festivals, and even basements and garages is important to the future of cities. While it seems obvious that some cities suffer from dull live music scenes while others can boast of hot ones, capturing that difference in numbers is no easy task. To begin to measure and compare the strength of live music scenes across the United States, we have developed an innovative set of metrics. Pulling together information from various data sources about concerts performed, tickets sold, record sales and critical rankings of artists, the size and musical focus of venues, and even the number of unsigned bands, we are able to show how cities vary in the supply, popular appeal, critical recognition, variety, availability, and affordability of live music. What emerges from the combination of industrial and “scene” statistics is a multi-dimensional profile of the music business in fifty different metropolitan areas around the country in 2004, with Chicago as the central focus.3 We also benchmark Chicago against a smaller comparison group of eleven cities, consisting of its demographic peers (Los Angeles and New York), along with a set of other cities that either have produced economic impact studies of their own music industries (Seattle, Austin, Nashville, Atlanta), stand out as particularly strong in several dimensions of performance (Boston, Las Vegas), or possess strong musical traditions (New Orleans, Memphis).
