]]> Germany is to ban large events until the end of this year, amid fears of a resurgence in coronavirus cases and as the World Health Organization warned that Europe was entering “a tricky moment” as children go back to school.

The chancellor, Angela Merkel, has set out a new package of measures in discussions with leaders of federal states. It comes amid a worrying rise of infection rates in Germany not seen since April, and a similar uptick in Italy and France.

]]> France is now allowing indoor gigs and events with under 5,000 people in attendance to go ahead without social distancing measures in place, said France’s Prime Minister Jean Castex in a recent interview with France Inter.

The only exception is départements designated as ‘red-zones’ where cases are spiking, including cities such as Paris, Lyon, and the Bouches-du-Rhône and Gironde areas where Marseille and Bordeaux respectively are located.

]]> 200 illegal parties were broken up in London in one weekend, it has been revealed. The Metropolitan Police have vowed to crack down on illegal parties across the capital, as COVID-19 restrictions mean nightclubs are still closed. Over 1000 unlicensed parties have taken place in London since June and a senior Metropolitan Police officer, Commander Ade Adelekan, has said the Met will come down hard on any illegal events.

]]> Spain has brought in a smoking ban and other restrictions to help stop the spread of coronavirus. Cases in the country have continued to rise, with 37,000 reported in the last week and the Foreign Office is currently advising Brits against all but essential travel to the country. In a bid to stop the virus spreading Spain has brought in a series of measures such as shutting nightclubs and forcing bars and restaurants to close by 1am. Hotels and restaurants must also maintain a distance of 1.5m between tables. People are also not allowed to smoke when a two-metre safe distance cannot be observed. The restrictions were announced by the national government on Friday, but regional governments have been allowed to choose when they apply in their region.

]]> Authorities in Malta have ordered the closure of all nightclubs and bars in an attempt to stem a new coronavirus outbreak on the island.

The measure will come into force on Wednesday, Health Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne announced on Monday.

Discos, night bars, concert halls and also sports clubs will have to close their doors until further notice, but restaurants and shops remain open, while public gatherings remain limited to 15 people.
